Melissa Lucashenko on Edenglassie

Two unforgettable stories. Two families. Two hundred years of history.
Join Melissa Lucashenko, a Goorie (Aboriginal) author of Bundjalung and European heritage, as she celebrates the release of Edenglassie, a sweeping epic that explores Queensland's colonial myths while reimagining an Australian future
1854: When Mulanyin meets the beautiful Nita in Edenglassie, the saltwater people still outnumber the British settlers. As colonial unrest peaks, Mulanyin passion for his new bride clashes with his loyalty to a homeland in danger.
Two centuries later, fiery activist Winona meets Dr Johnny when her Grannie Eddie has a serious fall. Winona just wants the obstinate centenarian back on her feet, but a shrewd journalist has other ideas. Eddie becomes a local celebrity as “Queensland’s Oldest Aboriginal.”
Her time in the spotlight brings past and present crashing together, revealing how far the legacy of Nita and Mulanyin’ s tragic story reaches into modern lives, with consequences they couldn’t have predicted.
The multi award-winning author brings her extraordinary storytelling gifts to this dual-timeline narrative. Her previous novel Too Much Lip won the 2019 Miles Franklin Literary Award, establishing her as one of Australia's most vital voices.
In conversation with novelist and screenwriter Louise Doughty, they will discuss this brilliant exploration of Brisbane's colonial history and its continuing impact. Through beautifully drawn characters and unflinching honesty, Melissa reveals how the strength and persistence of Goorie people endures across generations.
“A haunting new epic novel from one of our finest storytellers… Demotic, funny and uncompromising.” Tim Winton
