Keio Yoshida on Pride and Prejudices: Queer Lives and the Law
Join internationally acclaimed human rights lawyer Dr Keio Yoshida for a powerful conversation about his new book, Pride and Prejudices: Queer Lives and the Law—a pivotal exploration of LGBTQ+ rights, how far we’ve come, and how much further we have to go.
The right to life and the right to live free from discrimination are legally protected, but unlike the treaties and conventions that exist for women’s rights, disability rights, or freedom from racial discrimination, there is no dedicated and binding treaty in international human rights law with respect to LGBTQ+ rights.
Interviewed by radical cultural historian, activist, and author Diarmuid Hester, Keio will analyse case law from around the world, including Rosanna Flamer Caldera v Sri Lanka, the first global precedent to call for the decriminalisation of same-sex intimacy between women, in which Keio acted as counsel. He will also explore timely legal battles such as the bitter debate over self-ID for trans people in the UK and Florida’s recent ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill.
This urgent and timely discussion will address the legal problems that continue to contribute to the violence and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ communities around the world and will show what more needs to be done to protect queer lives.
