I am more than enough, and I am perfect with all my imperfections.
For fans of Candice Brathwaite’s Sista Sister, and Dolly Alderton’s Everything I Know About Love, Yewande Biala’s new book Reclaiming makes an important, enlightening and celebratory case for being who you are and not who the world wants you to be.
In 2021 Yewande Biala wrote a searing viral essay on the on racial renaming and the impact of having her name constantly mispronounced or changed. Names are an imperative aspect of selfhood and Yewande’s timely essay sparked a much-needed conversation surrounding how we as a society relate to each other, and the direct impact that misnaming has on our sense of self. Reclaiming consists of interlinked essays, covering a wide breadth of topics from struggling with your body image and mental health, to navigating social media and dating apps without damaging your self-esteem.
In conversation for this unique virtual event, Yewande will explore the process of affirming who you are in a world that is not always supportive. She will delve into the unique essays in the book and how they hold a mirror up to us all, so that we can learn to like what we see.
